is "legislative re she walked in and started shooting over 70 hounds of -- rounds of ammunition. >> what impacts is legislative reform having on buying and selling weapons? a horrific attack police say was totally unprovoked. a man set on fire while sitting in his car outside a convenience store. panic on board on airplane. passengers scream in terror when they suddenly see water. what caused the plane to splashdown. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a big wait a second for both -- weekend for both sides of the gun control debate in san francisco. going on at the cal palace today can tomorrow despite efforts to regulate gun shows like these out of existence. and on the other side of the argument, a small but very vocal group spent the day at san francisco's city hall calling for an end to gun

violence. kpix 5's don knapp has a look at both sides of the debate. [ people chanting ] >> reporter: one of these gun control advocates protesting here at san francisco city hall is mindy. she knows about gun violence firsthand. she was a teenaged camp counselor when she was shot in california in 1999 by white supremacist bowford furrow. >> he walked in and shooting shooting -- started shooting over 70 rounds of ammunition and i was shot twice if the leg. there were five of us wounded that day. as he left the jewish community center he shot and killed a filipino american worker. >> reporter: mindy says the newtown shootings reminded her of her goal of achieving gun control. >> newtown made me feel like a failure. and you know, i've met parents from people from virginia tech who have told me i'm here to remit their children -- represent their chin who did -- children who did not make it and that's a responsibility i am you kn happy to bear.

but i can't do it alone. >> reporter: before the rally, two big events focusing on guns were underway here in the bay area. in san francisco organizers bought back 250 guns spending the money. >> the background check that we have the place now that -- in place now that still allows 40% of the guns in the country to be purchased without that background check. it has stopped about 600,000 people from accessing guns every year. so we know that it works. >> reporter: but even as guns are being bought back in south san francisco, people were buying guns and ammo at the cal palace. they turned out in record numbers, probably 12,000 for the weekend according to gun show promoter bob templeton. >> people are concerned about the second amendment rights. >> reporter: he answers questions about compulsory background checks this way. >> california has good state records on both criminals and

mental health people who are prohibits persons. >> reporter: bob templeton says only a very small percentage of guns used this crimes come from gush in crimes -- in crimes come from gun shows. mindy says the gun that shot her came from a gun show. >> what about the republican compromise on background checks in. >> >> reporter: it's very interesting. they worked out a deal to cover unlicensed dealers and gun shows and internet sales. but they described the deal as politically shaky. so whether it survives or not but at least it's a deal and it's a start and it'sholding the package together for now. well, president obama turned the radio microphone over to a guest speaker for his weekly address today. francine wheeler lost her 6- year-old son ben in the sandy hook shootings four months ago. >> i've heard people say that the tidal wave of anguish our country felt on 12/14 has receded.

but not for us, to us, it feels as if it happened just yesterday. ed and in the four months since we lost our loved one, thousands of other americans have died at the end of a gun. thousands of other families across the united states are also drowning in our grief. >> she went on to appeal to americans to get involved before quote our tragedy becomes your tragedy. well, a shocking crime caught on tape. a man is set on fire while sitting in his car at a 7/11 in long beach. police say a man lit something on fire and then threw it into the open window of suv. witnesses say it went up in flames so fast the driver had no time to react. a local homeless man was arrested for what police say appears to be a random attack. >> when the suspect walked up to him, through a flammable -- flew a flammable liquid inside of the vehicle and caught the

victim on fire. suspect fled. >> the good samaritan helped the victim out of the car. he's now in the hospital in critical condition. the suspect was caught a block away. witnesses say the victim may have refused to give the suspect money before the attack. developing news rescuers are scrambling to find a missing snow shoer caught in an avalanche east of seattle. he was with friends at snoqualmie pass, a device showed the group was sent down the mountain at more than 50 miles an hour for about 1,000 feet. two men emerged from the snow but their friend is still missing. avalanches hit at least one other group of snow shoers today at heavy snow was falling in the cascades. now it started as a flight to pa lee ended with tore buyed passengers -- bali ended with tore fied passengers forced to swim for their lives. miraculously everyone survived. it happened around 3:00 p.m. local time near the bali

international airport. it was coming from the java province. it split in two just behind the wings. among those on shore who saw it our own kcbs reporter doug sovereign who happened to be at the airport when it happened. >> reporter: somehow they were able to get the people off and it's not far off the shore and they didn't have to go too far to get back on the land. but when we saw the split everyone here feared the worst. >> 45 were treated for injuries including broken legs and head wound. the plane was put into commission with lion's fleet just last month. the safety network says lion airplanes have been involved in six accidents since 2002 one of them resulted in fatalities. well, it is a time for strategy, schmoozing and celebrating in sacramento. the state's democratic party is meeting this weekend to discuss

the party's future plans, kpix 5's anne makovec explains the challenges ahead. >> reporter: it's the largest gathering of democrats in california since the party's historic election victories last november. >> i'm having a great time. >> absolutely outstanding. >> reporter: california democrats are celebrating winning a two-thirds majority in both houses of the state legislature. and the passage of prop 30 a new tax measure giving them more money to spend on their priorities. >> improve public education. implement the affordable care act, invest in infrastructure. >> reporter: things might be smelling le roses for democrats here at the state capitol but it's not the same scenario over on capitol hill where congressional democrats are trying to retake the house of representatives. >> we need to win 17 and we'll have at least three times that many in play in order to do that. >> reporter: they lost the democratic majority in 2010 and nancy pelosi lost her position as speaker of the house. >> but now we go back out there with plenty of opportunity.

a more awareness on the part of the public as to how obstructionist the republicans are. >> reporter: a new challenge for democrats trying to be strategic about the finances, open primary where two democrats go head-to- head in the same district, splitting resources that could otherwise be spent on a more united front. >> the politics and campaign finance and all that, it's already -- pretty expensive so i am concerned. >> reporter: in sacramento, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> the convention runs through tomorrow at the sacramento convention center. other bay area headlines an arrest in a kidnapping case that triggered a bay area ampler alert. san jose police say they have arrested 30-year-old karla hernandez. they arrested her on friday. she's facing kidnapping, child endangerment and drug charges, she's accused of stealing hang suv with an -- an suv with an 11-month-old girl strapped in the car seat. this happened early march 25th when the girl's mother was closing the garage door.

the vehicle and the girl were found about five hours later. the girl was not hurt. ♪ in mountain view the downtown post office has officially been renamed in honor of a fallen soldier. u.s. army lieutenant kenneth ballard was killed in iraq in 2004. he's the only mountain view resident to die in that conflict. the san francisco symphony strike is officially over. the board of governors and musicians ratified a new 26 month contract. a spokesman says musicians will get a 4.5% pay hike and the deal also includes higher out of pocket costs for medical coverage. well, it is enough to creep out just about anyone. a man peeping in on a young girl caught on a home surveillance camera. >> and cheers for three dozen families finally able to live

wants to see outside their home. a man lurking and peeping in windows. stockton police are looking for him. a home surveillance camera captures him peering into a young girl's room. early yesterday morning. neighbors called this video upsetting to say the least. police say the homeowner heard annoys and saw the man -- a noise and saw the man take off on a mountain bike. you are asked to give police a call if you recognize the man. the actress who played pip pee long stocking in the movie may face assault charges for an attack in the east bay. tami airy was arrested in walnut creek thursday. she's accused of say salting her -- assaulting her male roommate. a neighbor held the 38-year-old form racketries for police. she -- former actress for police. she played the 9-year-old with the superhuman strength and she was released from jail yesterday. u.s. secretary of state john kerry is urging china to take a tougher stance on its

ally north korea. as cbs reporter charlie d'agata explains beijing isn't offering any specifics on how it might reign in pyongyang. >> reporter: as north korea's main supporter and mo slider of -- provider of food and oil, china is america's best hope if breaking the stalemate over the country's nuclear ambitions. >> we both call on north korea to refrain from any provocative steps. >> reporter: kerry warned that would be a huge mistake but dictator kim jong-un continues to threaten to attack targets in the u.s. and china and japan. >> we really want to focus people on the better alternative. and we don't want to get into a threat for threat or you know some kind of confrontational language here. there has been enough of that. >> reporter: to encourage resolution of the conflict, kerry even said the u.s. would be willing to draw down

military assets in asia if china succeeds in reigning in north korea. although beijing didn't offer specifics, chinese leaders pledged to help find a peaceful solution to the standoff through dialogue. but the only way to get that is to get north korea back to negotiations that collapsed back in 2008. but north korean leaders have said repeatedly they have no intention of abandoning the nuclear weapons they now call their treasured guarantee of security. charlie d'agata, cbs news, london. >> and during a visit to seoul on friday, kerry said the united states would talk to north korea but only if the country gets serious about ending its nuclear weapons program. well, the price at the pump continues to fall. according to gasbuddy.com, the national average is $3.53 a gallon. compare that to oakland where it's $3.95 for a gallon of unleaded. in san francisco, it's $4.08 a gallon and in san jose you're paying around $3.96.

well, in an area motor yours if high home prices some families are taking a more hands on approach to home ownership. kpix 5's patrick sedillo with how they managed to get their homes for a bargain. >> reporter: this is the moment 36 families have been waiting for for a long time. owning their own homes in daly city. they helped to build with help from habitat for humanity. >> today is the culmination of 160,000 hours of bay area volunteer time. >> reporter: the peninsula is infamous for expensive houses. the median price? $600,000. keeps home ownership out of reach for most. the mortgage they will pay? >> $210,000. >> reporter: last year these high school students spent their spring break volunteering to help build the 36 condos. along with more than 12,000 people. >> washer and dryer. >> reporter: she and her family put in the hours. and she can hardly believe they

area. >> it's been amazing on facebook and twitter right? >> yeah they are i have a facebook message saying the fence is coming down in in the east bay. >> right and more than likely by monday afternoon, when we have the strongest wind gusts of all we will have that possibility of downed power lines. good evening everybody. stepping outside, the bridges, very gusty tonight. as well. live kpix 5 weather camera looking to the golden gate bridge. point ray so far. there you have sfo that had airport delays up to an hour -- up to an hour of windy conditions. ocean beach along the coast it's going to be another windy day tomorrow afternoon. now meanwhile currently sfo at 50 degrees, the winds have dialed back now out of the west 21 with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. bottom line is we will see decreasing winds in the overnight hours and tomorrow will pan out to be sunny with increasing clouds during the afternoon and increasing winds. the extended forecast calls for more winds and even the

possibility of frost. right now, we're in the 50s but when you couple up those winds, it feels a lot chillier outside than what it actually is. this is what you need to know. over sunday and especially on monday, the north and east bay hills, the diablo mountain range and the santa cruz mountains will have wind gusts up 60 miles per hour. travel with caution over the ridges. through the overnight hours and winds begin to doyle back east of the day. then you'll notice by tomorrow morning, when rise and shine just a bit on the breezy side north of the golden gate bridge. during the afternoon the wind speeds ramp up to 34 may i approach and 37 along the coast and pacifica. why? the wind. high pressure firmly in place. upstream, a pretty potent area of low pressure. the one dumping popous amounts of snow through the bay areament it is going november to the east and we still have a good shot of a -- stray shower in the forecast.

here's your sunday at 7:00 p.m. far reaches of the north bay a scattered hit and miss light shower up until the morning commute on monday. then turning partly sunny and windy monday night into tuesday is when we have that threat of frost returning to the north bay valleys. tonight overnight into the 40s. 44 san rafael. 45 redwood city and low 40s around sonoma. tomorrow's highs in the 60s to 70 degrees at best in napa but again when the winds pick up late day northwest. it's going to feel cooler than it actually is. there you have that extended forecast with that overnight shower sunday into early monday. and then he has wind on tuesday and wednesday we'll call it breezy. by thursday and friday high pressure is net nestling back into the bay area. wow it was 82 degrees outside today? >> that's amazing. >> honestly a very active weather pattern with windy conditions, frost and rain you got it all. >> i know it's crazy. but thank you for keeping us on

world to have a successful womb transplant. now she's pregnant. the # 2-year-old was born without a uterus. she had a transplants and she's been receiving inveto fertilization treatments since. now doctors at a hospital in turkey confirm the woman is expecting. worldwide one in every 5,000 women is born without a uterus. well, a south florida man exercise regime has him running into some trouble with the law. alex mesa and his backwards running has provided some entertainment for south beach tourists for the last six years, but today, someone called the police after mesa reportedly ran into traffic. the police came and gave mesa a ticket for obstructing traffic. and as for mesa he says running backwards saved his life after battling major medical problems and he has no plans to stop now. tiger penalized. before he even teed off today. and the a's look to keep their nine game win streak alive in
